On 25 November 2009, Ronnie James Dio's wife and manager announced that Dio was diagnosed with stomach cancer: "Ronnie has been diagnosed with the early stages of stomach cancer. We are starting treatment immediately at the Mayo Clinic. After he kills this dragon, Ronnie will be back on stage, where he belongs, doing what he loves best, performing for his fans. Long live rock and roll, long live Ronnie James Dio. Thanks to all the friends and fans from all over the world that have sent well wishes. This has really helped to keep his spirit up."

Holy Diver
You've been down too long in the midnight sea
Oh what's becoming of me

Ride the tiger
You can see his stripes but you know he's clean
Oh don't you see what I mean

Gotta get away
Holy Diver

Shiny diamonds
Like the eyes of a cat in the black and blue
Something is coming for you

Race for the morning
You can hide in the sun 'till you see the light
Oh we will pray it's all right

Gotta get away-get away

Between the velvet lies
There's a truth that's hard as steel
The vision never dies
Life's a never ending wheel

Holy Diver
You're the star of the masquerade
No need to look so afraid

Jump on the tiger
You can feel his heart but you know he's mean
Some light can never be seen

Repeat verse 1

Dio is an American heavy metal band led by vocalist Ronnie James Dio, who formed it in 1982 after leaving Black Sabbath. In an interview, available on the special edition re-release of Holy Diver, Dio states that he never intended to begin a solo career. His intention was to form a new band with fellow former Black Sabbath member drummer Vinny Appice. Naming the band Dio made sense from a commercial standpoint, as the name was already well-known at that time. Dio in Italian and Medieval Latin means "God."

Holy Diver is American heavy metal band Dio's debut album. It was given rave reviews, and is considered a classic in the world of metal.

History:

Released on May 25, 1983, it has been hailed by critics as Dio's best work and a classic staple in the heavy metal genre. The album was eventually certified Gold in the US on September 12, 1984 and Platinum on March 21, 1989. The original vinyl release had a photo-montage LP-liner.

A video game, Holy Diver, was made and based on the album with Ronnie James Dio as the main character, wearing the same clothes as in the Holy Diver music video.

Album art:

The cover was controversial, featuring a monster killing what appears to be a Catholic priest. Dio was quick to argue that appearances are misleading and it could just as easily be a priest killing a monster. If the Dio logo is held upside down it appears to read "Die", or a stylistically obscured "Devil." It could also mean the devil torturing the priest, but then the chain breaks and he plunges to the depths. It could also mean that priests sometimes get corrupted by evil.

Track listing: 1. "Stand Up and Shout" (Ronnie James Dio, Jimmy Bain) 3:18
2. "Holy Diver" (Dio) 5:51
3. "Gypsy" (Dio, Vivian Campbell) 3:39
4. "Caught in the Middle" (Dio, Vinny Appice, Campbell) 4:14
5. "Don't Talk to Strangers" (Dio) 4:53
6. "Straight Through the Heart" (Dio, Bain) 4:31
7. "Invisible" (Dio, Appice, Campbell) 5:24
8. "Rainbow in the Dark" (Dio, Appice, Bain, Campbell) 4:15
9. "Shame on the Night" (Dio, Appice, Bain, Campbell) 5:20

Bad news for Dio fans but worse news indeed for Ronnie, who has been diagnosed with stomach cancer. He has just completed his first chemo treatment, reports say all is going well. Wendy Dio, Ronnies's wife and manager, posts regular updates on Ronnie's official website -

I'm sure you'll join with me in wishing Ronnie a full and speedy recovery.

Keep on Rocking!

Terrible news indeed.

I saw Heaven And Hell this summer and i hope i will see them / Dio again live another time.

According to the RonnieJamesDio.com, Dio had his first chemo treatment and things do look positive for Ronnie.

I hope for the best but my feelings make me think that the summer gig was the last time i had seen Dio live.

Btw, the recordings from Rockpalast (live Germany) with Heaven And Hell is brilliant. I have a dvdr from this show which is great.
