Hi,
the messages are displayed per user,
in the chat window on the left siede you should see the names of the people who have sent you messages. Just click on the name of the people and you should be able to find the messages they sent and which you have not read yet.
If this does not help, click on the envelope on the lower right, all the chats you had with others are then displayed in the middle and you can select the appropriate user.
Other than that, sometimes things get out of synch and you will find a note that a new message has arrived, though you have already read it before.
